Explain the region, zone and geography concept on Microsoft Azure

In Microsoft Azure, a region is a geographical area that contains at least one Azure data center. Each region is separate and independent from other regions, allowing you to run cloud resources such as virtual machines, databases, and storage in multiple locations around the world. Microsoft Azure has over 60 regions worldwide.

A zone is a fault-tolerant deployment that consists of one or more data centers in a region. Zones are designed to provide additional resilience to your applications by ensuring that they are deployed across multiple data centers within a region. Each zone is an independent unit, with its own power, cooling, and networking infrastructure. Azure provides an SLA (service level agreement) of 99.99% for applications deployed across multiple zones within a region.

Geography is a logical grouping of one or more regions that share a common compliance boundary, such as data residency or compliance requirements. In other words, geographies define the area where data is physically stored, and they are often associated with a specific set of legal and compliance requirements. For example, the Azure geography called "Europe" consists of multiple regions that are physically located in Europe, and data stored in these regions is subject to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance requirements. Each geography is identified by a name such as "Americas", "Europe", or "Asia Pacific".

Introduce the Azure geography, zone and region in China

Azure has a presence in China through its local operating partner, 21Vianet. Azure in China consists of two cloud regions, China East and China North, which are physically located in the regions of Shanghai and Beijing, respectively.

Each Azure region in China consists of one or more data centers. For example, the China East region has two data centers located in Shanghai. These data centers are connected through a low-latency network and are designed to provide high availability, durability, and performance for Azure services hosted in China.

Each data center within a region is made up of multiple availability zones. An availability zone is a unique physical location within an Azure region, which is made up of one or more data centers with independent power, cooling, and networking. This allows customers to distribute their applications and data across multiple zones to protect against single points of failure.

Azure also offers regional pairs in China, which are pairs of regions within the same geography, that are designed to provide additional protection against disasters or other disruptions. The China East and China North regions form a regional pair in China.

It's important to note that Azure China is operated by 21Vianet, a licensed and locally-based company in China, and is subject to local regulatory and compliance requirements. As a result, some Azure services that are available in other regions may not be available in Azure China or may have different features and functionality.

Does it mean the zone is small than region, and region small than geographic?

Yes, that's correct. The Azure geography is the largest of the three concepts and represents a broad geographical area such as a continent. A geography is made up of multiple regions, which are typically composed of several data centers. Each region is a separate geographic location with its own data centers, power, and networking infrastructure, and is generally separated from other regions by a significant distance. Finally, within each region, there are multiple availability zones, which are physically separate data centers within a region, each with their own power, cooling, and networking infrastructure. The purpose of availability zones is to provide redundancy and availability by distributing applications and data across multiple zones.

What's the relationship between country, geography, region and zone? Explain it with country China and US

In Microsoft Azure, a country or region is a geographical location where Azure has data centers. A geography is a discrete market, typically containing two or more regions, that preserves data residency and compliance boundaries. A region is a set of data centers deployed within a geography, that offers availability zones for high availability and disaster recovery scenarios. An availability zone is a physically separate data center within an Azure region that provides high availability and resiliency to data center failures.

In China, Azure has two geographies: China East and China North, each with multiple regions. For example, China East has regions such as Shanghai and Zhejiang. These regions may have multiple availability zones.

In the United States, Azure has many geographies, including East US, West US, Central US, and more, each with multiple regions. For example, East US has regions such as Virginia and North Carolina. These regions may have multiple availability zones.

It's important to note that the actual structure and naming conventions of Azure regions, geographies, and availability zones may vary over time and may differ between different cloud providers.
